Maybe Six Months
This project is a book design and layout study focused on building technical and typographic skills using Adobe InDesign and Illustrator. The outcome is a fully designed book with a custom cover and faithfully replicated interior pages based on an existing publication.
Project Description, My Role, and Outcome
This project focused on developing foundational skills in Adobe InDesign and the Creative Cloud workflow, with an emphasis on typography, layout systems, and print design standards. The primary goal was to understand how professional book layouts are constructed and how design consistency is maintained across multiple pages.
The interior pages and cover sleeves were designed to closely replicate a physical book brought to class. This constraint required careful attention to paragraph styles, hierarchy, spacing, margins, and alignment. Working within these limitations helped reinforce best practices in typographic structure and page layout, as well as the importance of precision and consistency in long form design.
While the interior design emphasized accuracy and restraint, the cover allowed for creative interpretation. The cover concept was inspired by a short story selected from a curated list of podcasts, translating narrative tone and theme into visual form. Illustrator was used to create cover graphics, which were then integrated seamlessly into InDesign, reinforcing a professional cross application workflow.
The final outcome was a complete book design that balanced creative expression with technical discipline. Through this project, I gained hands on experience with paragraph styles, master pages, and multi page layout systems, as well as a deeper understanding of typography, graphic design, and the end to end process of book production.
